Compressed Argon Gas

Criogas produces and sells PurityPlus® Argon for use by a number of different Mexico companies.

A few significant traits made Argon a top choice for technical jobs, such as providing nuclear physicists with the thick atmosphere necessary to segregate neutrons, during the final years of the nineteenth century:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its comparative abundance in relation to other rare gases, and
  • its commercial practicability.

Unquestionably, the widest early application for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs as the twentieth century was getting underway. Later on, with the invention and commercial emergence of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s had to have a dense inert gas, usually Argon-based. Allowing that none of these are true specialty-gas purity applications, their popularity is as strong as ever and they still make up a significant segment of Argon’s sales volume.

Today, the primary specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in a number of analytical instrument applications, for example: in the detection and classification of trace and ultra-trace elements using Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon additionally finds application in many aspects of Gas Chromatography, particularly those that employ a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It’s frequently used also as a carrier gas when analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. With the advancement of technology, Argon has been used most often by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
